Progress is a result of action, not passiveness.
We’d like to think the world progresses with the mere passing of time.
Sometimes being passive is a solution to a problem. Rather than feeding fuel to a fire (i.e. contributing to drama/bothering a pimple), it helps to keep your thoughts and actions to yourself. And then there is SOPA and PIPA.
By now you’ve already heard plenty about the infamous two: SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (PROTECT IP Act). It’s become quite the battle between Hollywood and Silicon Valley. While Hollywood wants to protect its intellectual property, Silicon Valley wants to freely distribute information.
It is predicted that if SOPA and PIPA become laws, our favorite sites will be shut down: Google, YouTube, Facebook, Wikipedia, Twitter, etc. Our world will return to the days when society relied on few sources for information. Such an environment breeds opportunity for the media feed filtered information into our lives.
If you want an educated society that provides you with tools to change the world and become who you want to be, TAKE ACTION. SOPA and PIPA affects everyone, not just Americans.
If you live in the United States, find your elected representative in Washington (https://www.eff.org/sopacall). If you live outside the United States, contact your State Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs or similar branch of government. Tell them you oppose SOPA and PIPA, and want the internet to remain open and free.
The Senate will begin voting on January 24th. Five days until D-Day.
