Partying All Night in Hongdae

Partying All Night in Hongdae

2:39 am. Late Thursday night, early Friday morning. My best friend and I arrive in Hongdae after dinner at Bonjour Restaurant & Cafe. By the recommendation of the mystery magician--as appeared in KWOW episode 125, we are dropped off in front of Prince Edward Noraebang.

Note #1: noraebang means karaoke.
Note #2: Prince Edward is a real person.

We walk up the black stairs to the main counter. The interior is white and inspired by the Greek and Roman classical architecture. The decorative columns are a bit tacky. Arrive drunk and you learn to appreciate them more. You pay first, then sing. We paid 25,000 won for one hour (approximately $25 USD), then as service were given an extra 30 minutes to sing!

We started out in a small room. We lucked out and were moved to the VIP room, which was bigger and circular. Each room is embellished with floral wallpaper and has a stage with a spinning ball of lights.

Our recorded performance. My bestie and I singing EXO's "Mama" and more:

Reasons why I'd go back to Prince Edward Noraebang:

  1. Open 24 hours. Rain or shine. Happy or depressed. Come anytime.
  2. One of the best karaoke spots I've been to, especially in terms of microphone and output. Your voice will sound clear and crisp. No fighting over the instrumental track!
  3. With the newer songs there is vocal backup. If you forget how to sing part of a song, the pre-recorded vocals will take over until you begin singing again.
  4. Every room has a mini stage with a spinning ball of lights.
  5. There's a rooftop terrace with views of Hongik University.
  6. Come at a time when it's not too busy and you just might score bonus minutes!

4:25 am. My friend and I are hungry. We see a shiny building and are attracted to its aluminum foily quality. As we walk closer to it, we learn it is a Japanese restaurant called Delicious Kyoto (맛있는 교토/Mashitneun Kyoto).

Upon entering we immediately walk up a flight of stairs. We get excited from its interior design. On the right there are stairs that lead to a dark basement. Shelves are adorned with alcohol bottles. On the left is another set of stairs that led downwards to the main dining area.

Unfortunately the restaurant is closed. What a tease. Entrance doors are open and potential customers walk in, only to be shooed away with the feeling of unfinished business.

4:29 am. We walk to another shiny building, which houses the Samguri Pocha (삼거리포차). The pub is owned by YG Entertainment's CEO Yang Hyun-suk. Come here enough and you just might bump into members from Big Bang.

It's a pub so everyone around us drink. My bestie and I don't feel the pressure. Instead we secretly people-watch the other customers. We feel like we're watching scenes from a Korean drama. One woman has her face planted on the table while her friend dozes off with her chin rested on her swaying arm. A few tables away a party of eight men are gathered. They are rowdy. Between the two I choose to watch the drama with two drunk girls. What's their story? After briefly creating a plot in my mind, I resume to talking to my bestie.

We share an egg stew which contains some mysterious-looking items in bottom. It's a bit salty. We prefer the seaweed soup.

5:17 am. We've always passed by multi-bangs (aka: multimedia rooms), however never been to one before. Time to explore some new territory. We head to MoPlay located on the 6th floor of the building across Luxury Su Noraebang (서교동 367-39 / 367-39 Seogyo-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul).

Pay upfront 25,000 won for two hours. You can watch a movie, listen to music, play games, surf the web and even indulge in cookies.

Or maybe you just want to take a little nap.

Play Wii Sports with your best friend. Don't win too much or the following may happen:

7:35 am. We leave MoPlay and are totally pooped out. As we aimlessly walk the streets hoping to come across the nearest train station, we laugh at everything. Being delirious is like wearing a different pair of glasses.

7:54 am. Finally we find a train station. We bid farewell and head to our homes. People start their day with fresh faces as ours come to an end. Good morning and good night. Zzzzzz~

Romantic Day Trip to Bonjour Restaurant & Cafe

Romantic Day Trip to Bonjour Restaurant & Cafe

Bonjour Restaurant & Cafe, pronounced as "bong-joo-roo" in Korean (봉주르), is made of multiple buildings. You have more than enough options to choose where you want to hangout with friends and loved ones. There are designated locations for eating, drinking and firing up your marshmallows!

Located approximately 20 miles east from central Seoul, the 90-minute drive is worth to take your date on a day trip. On the way to the restaurant, you'll get a view of the Han River and pass by a wall covered by written confessions of love.

I recommend driving to Bonjour before sunset so you can get a clear view of the mountains and river. After the sun sets sit around the campfire and get toasty. Gather your friends, tell stories and laugh your butt off. Or share some smooches with your significant other.

I've been told Bonjour is more known for its ambiance than food. I agree the venue outshines the food. Regardless what my friends and I ordered was edible. Their Mung Bean Pancake (녹두빈대떡/nok-du-bin-dae-tteok) was simple and standard. It had a light crisp. Yummy in a bland sort of way. Cost: 15,000 won.

The Earthen Bowl of Yukgaejang (뚝배기 육개장/ttukbaegi yukgaejang) was slightly spicy. Bonjour's looked more bold than its taste. FYI: Yukgaejang is a soup simmered for many hours with beef, scallions, chili peppers and other ingredients. Cost: 8,000 won.

Their Pot of Sujebi (항아리 수제비/hangari sujebi) contained clams, zucchini and its usual hand-torn pieces of dough. It came with a little plate of chopped chili peppers. I poured in all the chili and ended up with a very spicy yet refreshing sujebi. It turned out to be even spicier than the yukgaejang! Cost: 8,000 won.

After dinner my friends and I changed location within Bonjour. We went inside the cafe building. We ordered and payed our drinks first then brought them over to the shoeless seating area. It was a Thursday night so it wasn't too packed. In fact it was only us and a couple sharing the whole room.

Another view of one of the cafe areas. There is another seating option on the other side of this same building! You wear shoes on the other side.

Wherever you go within Bonjour, the lights are made of straw hats.

Poop Cafe in Korea

Poop Cafe in Korea

My bestie and I get our digestion on at Ddo-Ong Cafe (또옹카페). We called it the Poop Cafe. It's located on the 4th floor of the Ssamziegil building on Insadong-Gil. Come for a chill conversation with friends or if you need a place to study.

We were hoping the cafe would be super brown and cartoony. To our dismay the interior was pleasant and tame. Fortunately there were old-school squat toilets placed on the wooden floor. That made me feel more excited about life.

The Poop Cafe used to sell 3D doodoo-shaped bread. But they stopped serving them. There's a vendor outside that sells 2D poop-shaped bread though. One for 1,000 won. It tastes like booguh-bbang.

The cafe sells cute dolls. They are the cross between an animal and a snail with spiraled poop shell. The doll on the right (above) at first appears to be Santa Claus, however flip him upside-down and you'll see a pig's butt with round tail.

The Poop Cafe tree is decorated with plungers.

Chamomile tea and chocolate latte~ Nothing quite like enjoying hotties on a winter day.

More dolls. This one may be ideal for couples.

The sun sets early during the winter. By the time we got out of the cafe it was dark. We head back home before too many troublemakers come out to play. Actually my bestie and I are troublemakers ourselves, but are kind enough to make space for others to have fun ;)
